Veysel Gokbel, Pitt recent Alum with PhD, just co-published an article called “Global financial trends in higher education” with Dr. James Jacob, former IISE director, on IAU Horizons Magazine. In the IN FOCUS section of page 23 of the magazine, Dr. Jacob and Dr. Gokbel are sharing their research on how financing models influence the future of higher education.
According to authors, there are nine prominent financial trends at the heart of many global higher education (HE) shifts. These trends include enrolment patterns, competition, government funding shifts, public support, curriculum revisions, increased personal and institutional debt, inequality among many HE stakeholder groups, technology, and interdisciplinarity. Even though they recognized many other issues that could be examined, they considered these financial trends as among the most critical ones faced by HE leaders today.

The article above is based on authors' previous study, entitled “Global higher education learning outcomes and financial trends: Comparative and innovative approaches”, was published in a prestigious peer-reviewed journal, the International Journal of Educational Development. The study reanalyzed current conditions of international higher education in response to financial trends, while examining nine top trends that higher education stakeholders are facing today.
