Stewart E. Sutin is currently an Adjunct Faculty Member of the University of Connecticut MBA Program. Prior to this, he served as a Clinical Professor of Higher Education Leadership in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, and as Associate Director of the Institute for International Studies in Education (IISE) from 2013-2017. Dr. Sutin entered public higher education ten years ago after a 29-year career in the banking industry that included serving as head of international banking operations at Mellon and as president of Bank of Boston International. He led efforts to develop and implement global business strategies and worked on projects with consulting teams from McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Booz Allen Hamilton. Dr. Sutin codeveloped and launched two global business institutes and was named president and chairman, board of directors, Banker’s Association for Finance and Trade (a subsidiary of the American Banker’s Association). He developed expertise in strategic planning, product and service innovation, risk management, operating efficiencies, financial and human resource planning and management, and “turn-around” leadership for individual business units.
In 2003, Dr. Sutin became the seventh president and chief executive officer of Community College of Allegheny County, an enterprise that provided credit and community education to more than 60,000 students year over year through a complex multicampus, multicenter delivery network. During his tenure in office, Dr. Sutin led development and implementation of multiyear strategic, educational, student affair, financial, and technology plans. Annual operating plans, budgets, and performance metrics were aligned with enduring goals. Special attention was afforded leadership development, equitable recruitment, and promotion practices, evidence-based decision-making, teamwork, and a focus on system-wide academic and student affair standards. Dr. Sutin served on the boards of trustees of two universities and on graduate school advisory boards at Carnegie Mellon, University of Pittsburgh, Brandeis, Duquesne, and the University of Miami. He also chaired the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education.
Dr. Sutin serves as a member of the faculty of administrative and policy studies in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh as clinical professor in higher education management. He instructs courses in leadership, strategic planning, budget and financial management, and human resource management. His research, publication, and public presentation focus attention on improvement of the business model of higher education. Recent books and studies he has co-edited and coauthored include Value-Based Education: Vision for a Higher Education Business Model, Increasing Effectiveness of the Community College Financial Model, and Community Engagement in Higher Education: Policy Reforms and Practice. He has conducted leadership workshops at the President’s Academy of the American Association of Community Colleges and for individual institutions.
Dr. Sutin holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA from Georgetown, and a BA from Penn State. He attended executive education programs at the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business and at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He served in the US Army Reserves and was honorably discharged with rank of Captain in 1978.
